Kalpana is a 2012 Kannada Comedy horror film that stars Upendra, Saikumar and Lakshmi Rai within the lead roles. Veteran Film maker Rama Narayanan has directed and created this show below his banner Sri Thenaandal Films. The film could be a remake of the 2011 Tamil film Kanchana. Veteran Actor Saikumar reprises the role of a transgender Kaplan; originally vie by Sarath Kumar within the Tamil and Telugu versions. Shruti and Umashri play supporting roles (Originally vie by Devadarshini and Kovai Sarala respectively) during this adventure story film.

The film was discharged across Karnataka on twenty eight Sept 2012 and opened to positive response from the critics and audience. The performances of Sai Kumar and Upendra are critically acclaimed. The film did well at the box office and was a 'Super Hit' in Mysore, Northern Karnataka, Chitradurga, Bellary districts, whereas a 'Hit' in alternative elements of Karnataka. Kalpana was the Sixth Highest Grossing Kannada film of 2012. Upendra won the Udaya Film Award for Best Male Actor for his performance within the film.

Raghava (Upendra) could be a fun-loving youngster who enjoys taking part in cricket with his friends. However at night he's petrified of ghosts and is often confined to his home below the care of his mother (Umashri). His brother (Achyuth Rao), relative-in-law (Shruti) and their youngsters live along within the same house. Once Raghava and his friends come in search of another ground to play cricket, they notice an abandoned field, which, it seems, is haunted. At home, his mother and sister-in-law witness some strange happenings. With the assistance of a temple priest, they ensure the presence of a spectral spirit haunting their home. Raghava begins to act funny and shows effeminate behavior that is once the presence of the ghost is known. The film goes on to unravel the mystery of the spectral Kalpana (Sai Kumar) and her relationship with Raghava.

Kalpana opened to usually favorable reviews from the critics. The performances of Sai Kumar and Upendra were critically acclaimed. The days of India gave the film three out of five stars and sated, "Full marks to Sai Kumar for his wonderful portrayal of a Mangalamukhi. Upendra shines as a person possessed. The film is bright finished fast-moving sequences that keep you on the sting of your seat." S Shyam Prasad of Bangalore Mirror gave the film three.5 out of five stars and stated, "Kalpana is recreation from the word go. The story could be a mixture of comedy and horror and the mix is ideal. Sai Kumar, as a transgender, plays the role superbly." DNA rated the film 3.5/5 and stated, "Kalpana could be a crazy mixture of humor and horror. Simply put, this can be a noteworthy show — goers watch it for a few funs!" IBN Live gave the film a positive review by stating, "Kalpana could be a smart possibility for horror film lovers. Upendra is fabulous in his performance." Deccan Herald additionally gave the film a positive review and declared, "The Dialogue King Sai Kumar mesmerizes as transgender Kalpana, who is wronged by one and every one. Upendra's exuberant energy gets another outlet in Kalpana and his transformation is gorgeous. Kalpana is for Uppi’s fans and for people who keep activity their fears below jokes."

Kalpana had a decent opening at the box office across Karnataka. The film opened to robust box office collections on it’s unleash day with ninetieth occupancy at single screens and around seventieth occupancy at multiplexes.
